red=blocks receiving bids at BBG2; blue=BBG1 and Sale 261 leases; green=active leases issued prior to Sale 261

Although bidding at Sale BBG2 was rather subdued, Gulf heavyweights BP, Chevron, Shell, and Oxy/Anadarko, along with increasingly important Woodside Energy, competed for the 4 red blocks in the Green Canyon area (map above and table below). These elephant hunters presumably see excellent Paleogene (Wilcox) prospectivity in those blocks.

17 of the sale’s 38 bids (45%) and $32.8 milion of the sale’s $47 million in high bids (70%) were for these 4 blocks. BP’s $21 million bid for GC 404 was by far the sale’s highest bid.

4052BP$885,99
4485Chevron$4,967,067

At this time, the high costs and technical complexities (e.g. deepwaterand high pressure/high temperature reservoirs) limit Wilcox development to major oil companies and well financed, technically savvy independents. Expect some of the international majors that did not participate in BBG2 to acquire lease interest at a later date, which will again raise questions about the merits of joint bidding restrictions.

From AAPG graphic-Wilcox trend map. Eastern area can be subdivided into an outboard and inboard trend, with wells in the latter area showing variable thickness due to salt tectonics contemporaneous with deposition (From Zarra et al. 2019’s AAPG Search and Discovery article).

Imbedded below is a good presentation on the Paleogene Wilcox by Dr. Mike Sweet, Univ. of Texas:

  • Biggest prize at the holiday party went to Anadarko: Mississippi Canyon 389 – 5 bids, $25.5 million high bid
  • Biggest holiday shopping spree: Shell’s 65 high bids accounted for 24% of the sale’s high bids (excluding CCS bids).
  • Big spender award: Hess – $88.3 million on only 20 high bids. Does Chevron approve? 😀
  • Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi: Strong performance by Woodside. 18 high bids, $24.8 million
  • Heia Norge!: Equinor continues to shine in the GoM! 13 high bids, $20.6 million
  • Spirit of America award to Red Willow Offshore which is owned by the Southern Ute tribe. 22 high bids!
  • Deepwater independents for (energy) independence: Beacon, Murphy, LLOG, Kosmos, Talos, Houston Energy, Ridgewood, QuarterNorth, Alta Mar, CSL, CL&F, and Westlawn
  • Smart shelf shoppers: Arena, Byron, Focus, Cantium
  • Even pace wins the race: Another solid lease sale for bp – 24 high bids.
  • So happy together 😀: Chevron and Hess combined for 48 high bids, $114 million
  • Coal in their stockings? Repsol (Sale 261) and Exxon (Sales 257 and 259) made up their own rules for acquiring carbon dumping leases. Perhaps some solid carbon in their Christmas stockings would be appropriate.
  • Christmas in July?: A lease sale in 2024 is needed. Sometime near the 4th of July holiday would be good. It’s up to you Congress!

Holiday greetings to our friends around the world!

Stocking stuffer for that special person! 😉

All we know at this point is that a Woodside contractor died during work activities at noon today (AWST).

The North Rankin complex is in 135 km offshore from Dampier on the northwest coast of Australia and is in 125 m of water.

More to follow.

Based on drilling contractor rig activity reports, the table below lists 19 deepwater MODUs under or soon to begin contracts in the GoM. (Further details are pasted at the end of this post.) Per the Valeris report, platform rigs are operating on bp’s Thunder Horse and Mad Dog platforms. Per the BSEE borehole file, Arena and Cantium continue to drill development wells on the GoM shelf.

Was 2021 the low point? Hopefully that is the case, but consistent leasing is essential.

Looks like Woodside is now officially the GoM operator of record (was BHP prior to merger). Kudos to them.

Shell continues to be the GoM bellwether. There is no OCS program without them.

What’s up with BP and Chevron? Big declines from both.

US super-majors Exxon and ConocoPhillips remain out of the picture, both in terms of lease acquisition and exploration. Disappointing.

Tip of the hat to Hess, LLOG, Murphy, and Talos – independents committed to deepwater production.
