Gulf oil production closing in on 2 million bopd

  • Pleasantly surprised to see EIA’s August numbers posted on time despite the govt shutdown. Kudos to EIA.
  • August production (1.979 million bopd) was the highest since Feb. 2020 (1.995 million bopd).
  • The last month with ave. daily production >2 million bopd: Nov. 2019 (2.001million bopd)
  • Record high Gulf oil production: Aug. 2019 (2.044 million bopd). That record could soon be surpassed given the ongoing deepwater ramp up.
  • Gas production, which is now overwhelmingly from oil wells, also ticked up. However, gas production remains at historically low levels. (See charts below.)
  • Time to take another look at ultradeep shelf gas? More on this in a later post.

October GoM oil production held near 2 million bopd. Two consecutive years with no tropical storm impacts.

EIA reports October production of 1.959 million bopd. September production was revised down from 2.000 to 1.999 million bopd, a very slight but symbolically significant change. Foul play? 😉

For the past 2 years, no tropical storms have significantly impacted Gulf of Mexico production. Don’t expect this to be reported elsewhere 😉

GoM production: 2 million barrels per day in Sept!

Per EIA, September Gulf of Mexico production averaged 2 million bopd on the button! New production from Vito and Argos were no doubt contributors, as production reached the 2 million bopd mark for only the third month in the history of the OCS program. The other 2 months were in 2019.

Imagine what US offshore production might be if the OCS oil and gas program was actually managed to succeed!

Also, as the official hurricane season comes to a close today, we are fortunate in that there have been no production shut-ins from tropical storms in 2023.
